Situated in the Rendezvous Hotel, corner of Mayoral Dr and Vincent St. Katsura’s approach to dining is a little more on the formal side, with the waitresses in traditional kimonos. The restaurant has a la carte menus, set menus, or buffets. With the buffets, there are a Friday Executive Lunch one, and a Thursday evening buffet. Lunches are from Tuesday – Friday. The quality of the food is excellent and, with the size and resources of a hotel at its disposal, Katsura makes good use of them. And, with a buffet, if you feel like eating the equivalent of a horse, then there is nothing to stop you.
The teppan yaki grill is a popular dinner choice. Each grill is reserved for either one or more parties. This form of cooking is a real showman’s art, with the individual chef three- quarters cook, and a quarter juggler and ringmaster. Whilst he, or she, is cooking, they put on a show for their customers : catching eggs in bowls, splitting them in mid-air with their knife, and generally making an entertainment out of the actual cooking of the food.
Great for more formal entertaining and, guaranteed, a fine evening’s (and lunchtime’s) dining out.

I am quite surprised a review I read here!
I had a very good experience at the restaurant.
The meal we ordered were very good.
Especially the soup came with Teriyaki Salmon!
I’ve never had the traditional soup here in NZ.
It was the same quality as excellent traditional Japanese restaurants in Japan.
(I am Japanese and worked very expensive Japanese restaurants for several years in Japan. )
Real Japanese food doesn’t have strong “sauce” flavor. You can enjoy the harmony of the ingredients natural flavor in your mouth.
The soup was perfect for that!
And service was good too.
very friendly and looked after us very well.
It was the last year so will find out as we are going there again soon!
P.S. I think it’s better have registered members system. Then everyone will have responsibility for their comment.

We had a group of 10. the first entrées took more than 45 minutes to arrive at the table, and were not all brought out togethe – neither were the mains. The final person to be served got their meal 30 minutes after every one else had finished. We had to remind them about them about our drink orders several times, then just gave up, but they still tried to charge us for them. This is the single worst Japanese restaurant I have been to. Would give 0 stars if I had the option.

Service was appalling, food was overpriced and very average (considering this restaurant is located in a hotel). Will not come again.
